Program Scope

What a residency here looks like, what we offer, and what we ask in return.

What a residency is

A residency at Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center is not a standard exhibition. It is a period of work in dialogue with the Observatory’s history, current research, unique building, and location in the Blue Hills. Each resident works with our Observers and staff and presents the result to the public.

What we hope for

  • New work that responds to our science, our 141-year climate record, or our history
  • Conversation with a scientist or Observer
  • Public engagement, such as a talk, open studio, or reception
  • Documentation that stays on this website

What we offer

  • Flexible timing, from a single season to a full year, with time to partner with the Observatory before the installation
  • Agreed-upon access to the building, instruments, and archive
  • Time with trained weather Observers and staff
  • A platform to exhibit work on site
  • Support to host outreach events
  • A feature on our website, newsletter, and social channels

What we expect

  • Authentic immersion in the work, such as hosting special events or volunteering as a tour guide
  • A public program planned with our team
  • Photos and a short description for our website, with credit to the artist
  • Credit to the Observatory in related materials

Who can apply

Artists living in the Greater Boston area, of all cultural backgrounds and disciplines. Artists from historically underrepresented communities are especially encouraged. Applicants are asked to visit during weekend public hours before proposing a project, so the work grows out of the place itself.

Project parameters

  • Maintain the general subject, scale, or scope of your proposal
  • Work with the Observatory to align with our mission
  • Expect that alterations may be encouraged during onboarding
