Before you apply
Come up and see the Observatory during weekend public hours. Seeing the building, the instruments, and the summit will make your proposal stronger, and we ask every applicant to visit before proposing a project. Artists living in the Greater Boston area, of all cultural backgrounds and disciplines, are eligible. Artists from historically underrepresented communities are especially encouraged.

How we choose
The Artist-in-Residence Committee looks for strong, original work, a clear connection to the Observatory’s science, history, or place, a realistic plan for being on site, and a plan to share the work with the public.
Questions we hear often
Who can apply?
Artists living in the Greater Boston area. All cultural backgrounds and disciplines are welcome.
Do I need to visit first?
Yes. Applicants are asked to visit during weekend public hours before proposing a project.
How long is a residency?
Timing is flexible, anywhere from a single season to a full year, depending on the project. Residents partner with the Observatory ahead of the installation.
What if my project changes after I am selected?
Keep the general subject, scale, or scope of your proposal. Some alterations may be encouraged during onboarding, as we work together to align the project with the Observatory’s mission.
What is expected of residents?
We expect residents to be authentically immersed in the work, for example by hosting special events or volunteering as a tour guide.
